Hotel Review: Hotel Thingholt Hotel, Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland Thingholt Hotel is one of a chain of hotels in Iceland all of which are in good locations, and of a good standard, but the Thingholt Hotel is the chains highest quality hotel.

Location of the Thingholt Hotel, Reykjavik

The Hotel is situated in the center of Reykjavik and you couldn't ask for a more convenient spot. If you want to pop out to the local stores or visit the tourist information center you are perfectly situated in the Thingholt Hotel. The one negative thing about this hotel's location is that you are right on top of Reykjavik's main street (Laugavegur) so that on the weekends (and only on the weekends) there is noise from the revelers below until the early hours of the morning. With this is in mind ask for a room on a high floor and keep your window closed.

Facilities, Building and Thingholt Hotel Rooms

The Hotel is architecturally aesthetic, with an ultra modern designed in shades of black white and grey, which reflects the surrounding Icelandic landscape of Lava fields. The elements are ever present in the Hotel decor, as you enter the Hotel there is an impressive water feature and throughout the hotel you can see the earthy elements of stone and atmospheric light. The modern design blends with the natural elements making the atmosphere relaxing; there is dim atmospheric lighting throughout the Thingholt Hotel.

The hotel rooms are also decorated in similar shades with crisp white linen and dark leather tiled floors, while the bathrooms have stainless steel fixtures. The rooms are small, too small for my liking. There are standard, deluxe, Studio and loft rooms. You have a choice between a small room with a larger bathroom (with bath) or a slightly larger room with a slightly smaller bathroom which has a large shower unit. I recommend avoiding the standard rooms as they are really small. If you want to spoil yourselves stay in one of the two Loft rooms which are on split levels with the bedroom and living room on different levels. The rooms are spotless and functional, the beds are comfortable and luxurious and all in all the rooms are very classy, the only negative being the size.

Food and Drink at Hotel Thingholt, ReykjavikThe Thingholt Hotel does not serve dinner or lunch but offers a complimentary buffet breakfast with plenty to choose from, toast, porridge, eggs, cereals and the usual hotel breakfast fare. The restaurant staff bustles around efficiently replenishing the breakfast throughout the serving hours (7:00-10:00). The lobby has an intimate bar area, which is not teaming with people and is not a central watering hole but does provide a watering hole for guests and you will often see a small group of guests chatting with the barman late at night. There is also a casual and comfortable sitting area in the lobby. There is no dining service in the hotel but next door to the Thingholt Hotel, Reykjavik is a reputable restaurant and the area offers many Icelandic dining opportunities.

Thingholt Hotel, Reykjavik Service

Helpful advice is on hand from the front desk staff with plenty of brochures and suggestions as to which Icelandic tours to do and which to avoid. The hotel staff will willingly offer to make inquiries for you by phone and book excursions for you. There is a safety deposit box for your valuables at reception, laundry services, parking is not included and is in public city operated facilities. The Flybus stops at the Thingholt Hotel door and takes you to or from the airport, this is not a complimentary service and should be booked through

Thingholt Hotel, Reykjavik PriceThe Thingholt Hotel Website offers one standard double room for 100Euros a night and a deluxe room for 120 Euros. My favorite hotel booking site offers the same room for 75 Euros a night. At either price this Reykjavik hotel is well worth the price and on a par with other Reykjavik hotels of a similar standard.

Why stay at the Thingholt Hotel

Location, location, location! A perfect location in a clean aesthetic and functional hotel for an average price.
