Prie Angelo Restaurant: Where to Eat in the Vilnius District of UzupisEurope
Cross the bridge over the Vilnia river opposite the Mabre Hotel in Vilnius, Lithuania and you will find yourself in the enchanting neighborhood of Uzupis. Uzupiz has an interesting history including being a Jewish neighborhood, a hangout for squatters and it's present incarnation the home to Vilnius' bohemian community. Artists, poets, writers and the like have chosen to make this UNESCO World Heritage site their home. In 1997 Uzupis even declared itself an independent republic, with it's own declaration of independence which includes statements like "Every dog has the right to be a dog".
The best way to see Uzupis is to wander the streets poking your nose into little openings, small stores and tumbled down backyards. You can see artisans at work in their studios and get a glimpse of what the Vilnius Old Town must have looked like before being made tourist friendly.
There are many cafes and restaurants in the area but two really stand out in Uzupis. Tores has an outdoor sitting area which commands an amazing view of the river, fields, the Old City of Vilnius and in the distance the white Cathedral. The other Uzupis restaurant is the smaller cozier Prie Angelo right in the center of the Uzupis district.
Prie AngeloAs you enter the small first room of the restaurant you will feel the atmosphere straight away. Soft music plays in the background – golden oldies, Pief, Sinatra, and the décor is eclectic with unique ornaments, crude statues, fairy lights in the windows and dangling charms, bottles and angels. You could easily be in a neighborhood café in Paris, on one wall is a couple of dozen cherubs and on a windowsill pottery figures. The café mirrors the district's symbol, the angel statue which you can see from the café window. The angel represents the artistic freedom of expression that the district's residents live by.
You will find this small café/restaurant buzzing in the high season and frequented by both locals and tourists. In the low season it is reclaimed by the locals and many sit for hours nursing a drink. Although at the time of my visit I felt like I had discovered a little known gem (I traveled in off season) on my flight back there was an article about the restaurant in the in flight magazine! Remarkably the café as yet does not have a website.
Prie Angelo is romantic and intimate although they do cater for small events and small groups.
The menu includes several reasonably priced meals and others a little over priced. For vegetarians there are several salads and baked potatoes. There is a full and varied selection of alcoholic drinks as well as the usual soda and coffees. The menu at Prie Angelo includes hot meat dishes, traditional Lithuanian food like potato pancakes and some other European favorites like goulash.
Although the food was good I would visit this restaurant mainly for the ambiance and for people watch, it is perfect for a hot drink before making your way across the bridge and back to Vilnius. For another interesting restaurant with a completely different style try Sue's Indian Restaurant or the Pink Milkshake both in the Vilnius Old Town.
If you are getting a Vilnius taxi to take you to Uzupis then get them to drop you off at the statue of the angel in the main square, there you will quite easily spot the Prie Angelo restaurant on one of the corners.
You can find Prie Angelo at Uzupis 9/Paupio 2 in the Uzupis district of Vilnius, Lithuania. Although they have no website you can call on +370 65522334
