Visit Monaco in the Mediterranean
Monte Carlo is in Monaco and it is a favorite port of call for many Mediterranean cruise ships. Monte Carlo is very small and sits on a large rock named Mont Des Mules and it overlooks the sea. Some people think Monaco and Monte Carlo are the same but Monaco has several different areas. The old town of Monaco Ville surrounds the palace on the southwest side of the Monaco harbor and to the west of Monaco Ville is the new suburb harbor and marina of Fontville. The resort of Larvotto is located here and the sand on its beaches was all brought in. Monte Carlo is located in the middle of all this.
The Grimaldi family captured the rock in 1295 and they kept defending it against their attackers. The Grimaldi family is still a very visible royal family in Monte Carlo. Prince Rainer was married to Grace Kelly so most of us have heard of the Grimaldi family.
When you see Monaco, you will want to stay. When you are coming into the sheltered harbor, the view is spectacular and the city is spread out over the rock and into the sea. Monaco is such a small place you might think you can walk around the city but this will only work if you are a mountain goat. Many tunnels, elevators and escalators can be used to get around.
On the western side of the harbor, an elevator will take you up to Monaco Ville and will let you out at the Oceanographic Museum where you must spend some time. The museum has a wonderful aquarium with tropical and Mediterranean species of marine life.
You must also visit the Monaco Cathedral where Princess Grace and Prince Rainer were married and Princess Grace is buried here.
